Public Service Event

Hello all!

In a few weeks, this July, there is a unique opportunity to be involved in a brand new public service event!
The Ride of Courage is a three day cycling tour – the next evolution of the Kids Cancer Care Cycle Challenge. For those familiar with the previous event, Tour 4 Kids, this is a new approach to their cycling fundraiser.

As radio operators, our mandate from the event is to support road safety and to ensure communications coverage. Your expertise is invaluable in meeting this mission and ensuring the smooth flow on the course during the days of the event.

We have some secondary objectives in supporting the cyclists themselves, looking after the volunteer teams, and providing situational awareness for the Ride Manager.
We are expecting to pair the radio operator volunteers with other event volunteers – either as a rover team, or as part of a critical intersection team.

The event occurs on 14, 15, 16 (Fri, Sat, Sun) July 2023 –  starting and finishing in Water Valley, AB each day, with overnight stays in Camp Kindle on Friday and Saturday nights.

We understand that being available for all three days is a significant time commitment. If you are only able to help for one or two days, we will do our best to work with your availability.

This event is a fundraiser

If you’ve been waiting for your floor pump to make you a new best friend, this is one of the only ways that it could happen!

As of 27 June – currently needing about  7 more amateur radio volunteers.
The organisation and their volunteers are a really friendly group of people to hang out with – and it’s a handy reason to get out of Calgary for the last weekend of Stampede.

While it is based on a past event, this one is a serial number 1 event – there are some pretty ambitious routes (up to 170 km in a day, on a road bike!).
That means some higher uncertainty up front.  It also means we have the chance to, and are aiming to accomplish making a strong showing for amateur radio.

No prior experience needed –  let us know about yourself and your equipment.

With the ongoing planning effort, and several items still in flux, it is difficult to provide a complete brief at this time.
However, it is also important to us that our volunteers are able to make an informed decision about whether this is for you.  We want you to know what you are getting into as best we can, up front.

I know there are a lot of details that aren’t here, send your questions!

We are keeping public postings about this here:  https://caraham.org/Public-Service-&-Ham-Events-&-Blog
Our emails are there, and you can respond to me here if you’d like.

Flight tracking

ADSB Aircraft Tracking
2023-05-19
Have you ever wondered about that aircraft flying over your head? Perhaps you are already aware that
most aircraft are required to transmit location data. Anyone can easily receive that publicly available
broadcast data. Maybe you already receive that data and are feeding it to one or more of the flight
trackers. This article will help explain the fascinating hobby of aircraft tracking and will help you set up a
receiving system or tell you why it is desirable to send the data to other flight trackers.
Most aircraft worldwide are required to transmit data using a system known as ADS-B meaning More >

Field Day update 2023

The Field Day planning committee just met for a brief progress meeting.  The following issues came up
Thank you to all the hams  for offering your help to participate in another field day  the last weekend of June.   Brian VE6CKC has booked Hill Crest community center SW of Innisfail for the last weekend of June. Some of us met at the hall and we all agreed it is a great place for field day as it has a hall and an outdoor covered operating  area and lots of room for antenna separation.

Here is the link for directions

Exit off QEII just south of the refinery at Exit 357 and take the first ramp on your right. Turn left at the Stop sign. (Hwy 587 west). Go approximately 7 miles to RR22 South
Turn South on RR 22 ( there is a Hillcrest Hall sign ) and turn right at the Stop sign. The Hall is on your right. The address is 2206 TWP342.
Please note that you are responsible for providing your own meals , lawn chairs, mosquito spray, and any  other personal items you will need during field day operation.

Invitation to come and camp for the weekend for a small donation to the club.

Bring your own food and drinks.

Maybe a photo from last year for attention.

Field day will be a great opportunity to gather and work together as hams to communicate around the world. If we all do a small part to help field day will be a great experience for everyone involved as well as learning some new skills and getting more operating experience.
We look forward to a great couple of days working together!
Please let us know by e-mail of any ideas or additions you can think of to help us plan this field day.

Artemis 2 astronauts flying to the moon could phone home with ham radio

It’s been 40 years since the first astronaut called an amateur radio operator on Earth. Now the moon is in the community’s sights.

Most of the astronauts aboard the Artemis 2 mission, which will send a quartet of people around the moon in late 2024, are certified ham radio (amateur radio) operators. There’s high hopes in the community that the astronauts may call home from deep space, the president of Radio Amateurs of Canada told Space.com.

DESCRIPTION

The Digital Library of Amateur Radio and Communications is a library of materials and collections related to amateur radio and early communications. The DLARC is funded by a significant grant from Amateur Radio Digital Communications, a private foundation, to create a digital library that documents, preserves, and provides open access to the history of this community.

This free resource combines archived digitized print materials, born-digital content, websites, oral histories, personal collections, and other related records and publications. The goals of the DLARC are both to document the history of amateur radio and to provide freely available educational resources for researchers, students, and the general public.
